Native American Music

Dreams from the Grandfather
Robert Tree Cody (Dakota/Maricopa)
This collection of eleven songs for the flute and
voice draw on Codys Dakota/Maricopa heritage
as well as the Lakota, Zuni, Acoma, and
Cherokee peoples. Beautiful solo flute and voice,
both original and traditional. This is as good as
weve ever heard in this genre.
Ancestral Voices
R. Carlos Nakai (Diné/Ute) with William Eaton
1994 Grammy® award finalist in Best Traditional Folk Music, Nakai
and
Eaton create a diverse music that celebrates the rich traditions of
the peoples
of the Americas. They are joined on two tracks by one of North Americas
top
powwow drums, the Black Lodge Singers of Blackfeet. Two bonus tracks
on
CD.
Emergence
R. Carlos Nakai (Diné/Ute)
The best representation of Nakais concert performance. The fifteen
songs
begin with renditions of traditional melodies from the Plains and
Nakais own
works in the traditional style. Nakai then enhances the flute and
his own
chanting with electronic processing to create the sound that has enraptured
so many listeners. Closes with an ethereal rendition of 'Amazing Grace.'
Natives
R. Carlos Nakai (Diné/Ute) and Peter Kater
Peter Kater on piano combines with Nakai on flute. CD Review gave
the
recording a perfect 10/10, exclaiming that the honest expression and
simplicity of the improvisation make it hard not to be touched.
Ghostdance
Bill Miller
After more than three years since his last release, Bill Miller emerges
with
Ghostdance, a true testament of both his acoustic and Mohican roots.
Ghostdance is an emotional journey of lyrics and sounds that teams
contemporary Native American, Western, and folk music with Miller's
traditional
Native Heritage.
The Red Road
Bill Miller (Mohican)
This great new recording is accessible to a wide audience. Many of
the songs
are from his previous albums but remixed with really great bridges.
Contemporary music and lyrics on some tracks join together through
traditional drum, and on others, rattle and chants with flute. There
are even
stories told, some in English and some in native tongue. A beautiful
and
powerful collection. If you sit and listen to it, well be surprised
if you dont
agree.

In the Spirit of Crazy Horse
Barry Stramp
This recording is a collection of original songs by
various artists, compiled to raise funds for the
Leonard Peltier Defense Committee and to raise
consciousness for Leonard and the indigenous
people of North America in general. This benefit
recording is a re-release with new songs on it,
including one by Buffy Sainte-Marie called 'Bury
My Heart at Wounded Knee' from her first
recording in 14 years, and its as dynamic as any
of Dylans. Artwork by Leonard and six panels of
information included
Native American Currents
Various Native American
This is an essential collection of contemporary Native American music
featuring R Carlos Nakai and Peter Kater, Joanne Shenandoah, Robert
Mirabal, and Joy Harjo and Poetic Justice. The musical partnership
of Nakai's
Native flute and the keyboards of Kater have helped define contemporary
Native music in this decade. Joanne Shenandoah's voice is at once
pure,
earthly, and soothing. Mirabal weaves guitar, keyboards, bull roarer,
didgeridoo, and percussion to create songs with both native and world
influences. The "tribal-jazz-reggae" sound of Poetic Justice
is the perfect
backdrop to the poetically potent lyrics of Joy Harjo.
Honor the Earth Powwow
Intertribal
This collaboration of world-class percussionist and recording artist
Mickey
Hart and Smithsonian ethnomusicologist Thomas Vennum is the first
truly
state-of-the-art documentation of a Native American powwow, including
many
singers at the inter-tribal gathering.
The Ultimate Collection
Douglas Spotted Eagle
Heres a kind of 'favorite hits' album that also contains never-before
released
songs. Spotted Eagle fans will surely prize this as it has 16 songs
of the
artist and fans favorites. A portion of the proceeds of this
album go the
National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse.
Smoke Signals
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Various Artists
Music from Sherman Alexie's acclaimed 1998 theatrical release "Smoke
Signals". Featuring traditional Native American chants and contemporary
Native American folk music, coupled with an original score by Seattle
based
composer BC Smith. Contemporary Native American artists include Dar
Williams, Ulali, and Jim Boyd.
Things We Do
Indigenous
Embedded deep within the Indigenous sound is the influence of legends
such
as B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Freddie King. But this family of musicians
can
trace their personal roots back even further; members of the Lakota
Nation,
Indigenous adds a bit of their own culture to America's earliest traceable
music, the blues.
